何も貢献しない脱線だが、新しい文法を考えると「Rules Grammar Change: English Traditional Replaced To Be New Syntax With」という The Onion の記事を思い出す。
The Japanese ... have no right to transcribe their chinese loanwords phonetically by the wrong chinese characters as they do now, but will have to reform their system.
Teaching French is become the profession of Foreigners of all sorts, who know not how to shift for a living, and often have no qualification at all. The generality of the French know not their mother-tongue: but the few who are masters of it are not, on that single account, capable of teaching it.(フランス語を教えるのは、他の仕事ができない、多くの場合はまったく無能の外国人の職業になってしまった。 A Grammar of the French Tongue; with a Preface Containing an Essay on the Proper Method of Teaching and Learning that Language
Our whole system seems planned to give a self-conscious knowledge about the language and not the language itself.... If our object is to penetrate into the very arcana of another tongue, to think and feel as a Frenchman thinks and feels, then surely this will be accomplished the quicker, the more the English is kept out of sight. A General and Practical System of Teaching and Learning Languages; Applied to All Languages, Especially the French
[W]hosoever learns a second language must learn it by comparison with his own and in no other way; whereas the child cannot learn it in that manner; for he has no object for comparison.... The supposition, therefore, that a full-grown person can learn a second language in the very same manner that he learnt the first, amounts to an absurdity. Direktor Walter on the Direct Method" という記事で、direct method の理念と実践がわかりやすく紹介される。
It has often been uttered as a reproach — Surely children should learn their own language properly before learning another. True, they certainly should learn their own language, but while learning another.
There can be no greater test of the knowledge of our language than that of a good translation from French, German or Latin into the mother-tongue. It is incomparably harder than an essay, or composition as it is called.
